The Caring Kitchen had the exciting opportunity to host a hands-on cooking session for students, giving them a taste of working in the kitchen.
Greg, the Head Chef of The Caring Kitchen, started the session by demonstrating how to correctly slice ingredients and create a nutritious poke bowl. Then, the students had the chance to try their hand at preparing their own bowls. They were eager to get involved, carefully putting together their ingredients, and excited to see the results of their efforts.
The students loved the experience. They not only enjoyed cooking but also took pride in their creations. As they plated their bowls, it was clear that the event was more than just a cooking lesson, it was a chance for the students to gain valuable skills, unleash their creativity, and build confidence in the kitchen.
Raph Taylor, Careers Lead at Camphill Wakefield, said: “The Caring Kitchen kindly agreed to run a hands-on catering session for our students as a careers activity. Our students benefit from these practical Employer Encounters as a way to explore different types of work from an experiential and sensory perspective.
I was keen to find a catering business with which to collaborate, and Greg agreed at the first conversation and subsequently provided an experience at the right level for our students. Two weeks down the line the students are still talking about their catering experience, and some of them would like to now take this further into a commercial kitchen as their work experience.
A massive thank you to Greg and The Caring Kitchen.”
Greg Staric, the Head Chef of The Caring Kitchen, said: “We are committed to giving back by inspiring young people and sharing our knowledge through hands-on experiences. We want to contribute to the growth and development of our community by fostering mentorship, teamwork and a passion for cooking.”
Events, like Camphill Wakefield’s Careers Takeover Day, demonstrate how supporting The Caring Kitchen extends beyond the hospice and positively impacts the wider community.
